Last Monday we closed the practice a few minutes early to practice yoga. It was quite amusing to see people outside our doors (we have glass doors that lead out into the main hallway of our building)–do double takes as we were in a circle in our reception area doing stretches.
Why, you may ask, did we stop our of production to “do yoga”? Well, we tend to forget that our body is an instrument that must be nourished and maintained to accomplish any tasks. Both the doctor and the rest of the team work all day in positions that lead to neck, shoulder and arm pain, misaligned spine, carpal tunnel complaints, etc. Not to mention the emotional stress that comes from being in physical discomfort, or stress caused by mundane issues we all deal with regularly.
Yoga at work provides both the physical and mental components that can help reduce the common aches and pains created through tight muscles and repetitive use patterns, while strengthening the body and having it be in correct alignment.
Making a life style commitment to achieve wellness can be a difficult thing to embark on, but once companies see the benefit both they and their employees are receiving from work place yoga, successfully attended programs may be implemented. Remember, that the more stress free you feel at work, the more your wellness increases, and the more productive your day will be.
